Gaylord Perry worked his way into the New York Giants starting rotation in 1964. He was traded to Cleveland in 1972 and responded with a 1.92 ERA, led the American League with 24 wins and won the Cy Young Award. He was traded to Texas in 1975 and after three seasons, he was dealt to San Diego in 1978. He won 21 games for the Padres that season and was honored with his second Cy Young Award. He and Pedro Martinez are the only two pitchers to win a Cy Young Award in each league.

He was traded to Kansas City in 1983 and moved into third on the all-time strikeout list and became the oldest pitcher to throw a complete game shutout. He was induced into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1991.
