Born in Joplin, Missouri, Darrell Porter grew up in Oklahoma City. He was selected as the Oklahoma High School Athlete of the Year as a senior in 1970. He was an All-State selection in football and baseball, along with being a High School All-American in the sport of football. Porter signed to play football at the University of Oklahoma but five days later signed a professional baseball contract with the Milwaukee Brewers, their number one draft choice.

He played for the Brewers for six years and then was traded to the Kansas City Royals in 1976. The Royals won three division titles and one American League pennant and named to three All-Star teams during his four years in Kansas City. In 1979, he joined Mickey Cochran as the only other catcher in major league history to have 100 walks, 100 runs scored and 100 RBI’s in a single season. In 1981, Porter signed with the St. Louis Cardinals. During his five year stint with the Cardinals, they won two National League Championships and a World Series. In 1982, he was named Most Valuable Player of both the National League Championship Series and the World Series.
