Sparky Stalcup coached basketball at the University of Missouri from 1946 to 1962, compiling a 195-179 record in 16 seasons.

His 195 victories stood as the Mizzou record until broken by one of his protégés, Norm Stewart. Before his term at Mizzou, Stalcup coached at Maryville State Teachers College (now Northwest Missouri State  University), where he had a record of 152-56.

At Mizzou, eight of his teams finished in the league’s first division, including five that placed second. He coached two teams to titles in the Big Seven Holiday Tournament and tutored three All-Americans Bill Stauffer, Stewart, and Charles Henke.

Stalcup was president of the National Association of Basketball Coaches in 1961-62 and was the longtime color commentator with Mahlon Aldridge on Mizzou radio broadcasts.

Stalcup played in the 1928 Oregon (Mo.) High School team that won the Missouri state championship despite not having a gymnasium, and reached the quarterfinals of the National Interscholastic Basketball Tournament.

He was named to the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 1979, and to the Northwest Missouri State University Sports Hall of Fame as a player and coach in 1982.
