"I'm not buddy-buddy with the players. If they need a buddy, let them buy a dog." - Whitey Herzog on his coaching style.

Whitey Herzog managed four different major league teams, five years with the Kansas City Royals from 1975-’79 and over 10 years with the St. Louis Cardinals from 1980-’90. His 1,281 victories rank 25th on the all-time list for managers in the big leagues. Herzog logged eight years in the majors as a player, including stints with Washington, Kansas City, Baltimore, and Detroit, as an outfielder-first baseman.

In four full seasons in Kansas City, he managed the Royals to three straight division titles and one second-place finish. In his nine full seasons as manager and general manager for St. Louis, he had the league championship and World Series victories in 1982 and National League titles in 1985 and 1987.

Herzog was inducted into the MSHOF as a Coach in 1994 and as a Legend in 2008.
