A life-long resident of Northwest Missouri, Flanagan attended Northwest Missouri State and lettered three years in football. His coaching career began at King City High School in 1958. After seven years, he became the head football coach at Savannah. Flanagan arrived back at Northwest Missouri State in 1971, as assistant football coach and assistant track coach. In 1978, he assumed the role of athletic director. Under his direction, Northwest won the MIAA Indoor Track Championship in 1982 and 4 MIAA Championships in football, including the school’s first ever NCAA Playoff appearance in 1984.
