Richard Fairchild compiled a .661 winning percentage with a total of 463 wins and 237 losses during his 28-year career as a high school basketball coach. After his first coaching job in Skidmore, Missouri, Fairchild spent a productive six years in Oregon, Missouri, leading that team to win two conference championships, three district titles, and to place fourth overall in the state. He then coached the local high school basketball team in Treynor, Iowa, steering them to win five conference titles, and four district championships, and to place fourth in the state twice and second once.

In 1974, Fairchild began a 14-year stint at Chillicothe High School, overseeing the Hornets as they won five district championships, 11 district titles, and one state championship. Additionally, the Hornets made five other state tournament appearances and had over 20 wins under Fairchild’s guidance.
