Known as “Moon”, Mount Vernon native enjoyed an outstanding football career at two Missouri colleges, and went on to become a legendary coach. Mullins lettered in football, basketball and track for three years each in high school, then lettered as a freshman football player for the then-Southwest Missouri State Bears of coach Fred Thomsen in 1949.
He started at linebacker as a sophomore the following years, and went both ways as a junior, playing both center and linebacker. The 1951 Bears won the MIAA championship, and Paul was named first team all-conference. After two years of active duty in the Navy, he concluded his college career in 1954 at Missouri Valley College, helping the Vikings to a 9-0-2 record and earning Associated Press Little All-America honors. The following year, he was
in camp with the NFL’s New York Giants, staying with the team until the last cut. He is a member of the Missouri Valley Athletics Hall of Fame.
His coaching career began in Carrollton (Mo.) High School and, in the late 1950s, he was part of the Springfield Central High School football staff, under head coach Jim Mentis.
Mullins became head coach at Greenwood in 1964 and over the next 25 years, compiled a record of 162 wins, 86 losses and 9 ties. His 1981 team captured the state Class 1 championship, with a 14-0 win over Gallatin at Busch Stadium in St. Louis. Three other of his Blue Jays teams finished as state runners-up.
