H.A. “Jimmy” Jones gained much respect and notoriety in the horse training world, saddling 54 stakes winners in his 39 years as a trainer.

Jones was born in 1906 and soon joined his father, horse trainer Ben A. Jones, on the race track. He saddled his first winning horse in 1926 in New Orleans. He served as assistant to his father in breeding and racing their own horses until 1931, when they started training the Woolford Farm horses. In 1939, the father-son team moved to Calumet Farm and started a dynasty. Calumet was America’a leading owner 12 times and the leading breeder 14 times between 1941 and 1961.

Jones made history when he became the first trainer to win more than $1 million in purses.
