Jerry Lumpe

Jerry Lumpe was born in Lincoln, MO and grew up in nearby Warsaw, where the local baseball field is named after him. He attended high school in Warsaw where he excelled in basketball and American Legion Baseball. In 1950-’51, Lumpe played baseball for the Sedalia Chiefs in the Central Missouri Ban Johnson League.
Lumpe signed a professional contract as a second baseman with the New York Yankees in 1951. Lumpes’ first team was the Yankee affiliate in McAlester, Oklahoma. The following year, Lump played in Joplin, MO. During this time, he attended Southwest Missouri State University in the winter and played on two NAIA National Championship basketball teams. In 1953, Jerry played triple-A baseball with the Kansas City Blues, a Yankee affiliate and the Binghampton Triplets. He made it to the major leagues with the New York Yankeess in 1956, after a two year stint in the Army. As a member of the Yankees, Lumpe won two World Series (1957 and 1958). During the 1959 season, Lumpe was traded from New York to the Kansas City Athletics, where he played through the 1963 season. Lumpe was an All-Star in 1964 for the Detroit Tigers and played there until his retirement in 1967.
