Dr. Isadore Middleman

Isadore Middleman was the team doctor for the St. Louis Cardinals from 1949 until he died in 1968.

He received his M.D. from St. Louis University in 1933, then served his internship and residency at Jewish Hospital, also in St. Louis. After several years in private practice, as a surgeon, he became the chief of surgical medicine at Fort Hamilton and later the commanding officer of the 37th portable surgical hospital, which was stationed on Guadalcanal.

In 1950, Middleman successfully operated on Marty Marion, who was then player-manager for the Cardinals. In gratitude, Marion invited him to join the team’s spring training in St. Petersburg, Florida. The then-team doctor, Dr. Robert Hyland was retiring and Middleman was invited to step into his shoes.

Middleman also continued in his private practice and served as the team physician for St. Louis University.
