Newman earned National Water Polo Hall of Fame honors in 1983, where he was introduced as the “Missouri Scoring Machine”. Among nine All-American selections, he held at least one for every position in the sports – guard, center, forward, hole forward and goalie.  He was never held scoreless in any game in which he was not goalie during his 42 years of competition.

The Roosevelt High School (St. Louis) graduate learned water polo as a conditioning exercise for his lifesaving work with the Meramec River Patrol. He began competition with a team including players from the Missouri Athletic Club.  That team finished second and no worse than third in national action including Olympic tryouts. He competed in the 148, 1952 and 1964 Olympic trials.
