"...he [Gary Filbert]...had a great ability to pick the right people for the right job who could get it done. And he would let them do it." - Coach Norm Stewart

A St. Joseph Benton High School graduate, Gary Filbert lettered in football, basketball, and track.  After graduation, he headed to the University of Missouri and played for the freshman basketball squad.  Upon returning from a four-year stint in the U.S. Marine Corps, Filbert was a three-year varsity basketball letter man for the Tigers.

Upon graduation, he became the Director of Athletics, head basketball coach, and history teacher at Mexico High School, where his teams won 260 games and lost 110.  In 1969, Filbert jumped to the college ranks, taking the reigns of the Missouri Western State College men’s basketball team.  He led the team to a 210-144 record, three NAIA National Tournament appearances, and was a three-time Missouri NAIA District Coach of the Year selection.  In 1982, he was hired as an assistant coach under Norm Stewart at the University of Missouri.  He helped guide the Tigers to a No. 2 ranking in NCAA Division I polls and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament.  MU then hired Filbert as the Assistant Director of Athletics in 1985, a post he would hold for three years.

Filbert was inducted into the MSHOF as a Coach in 1989 and later honored as a Legend in 2011.
