A few years ago, when hunting for events that could enhance experiences with the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame, Executive Vice President Marty Willadsen floated this idea: A sporting clays shoot.
What a perfect fit it’s been here in the Ozarks.
The Sporting Clays Classic sponsored by Killian Construction and presented by Bass Pro Shops is celebrating its seventh annual event on Friday, Sept. 7 at the Ozarks Shooters Complex, located in Walnut Shade off Highway 65 between Springfield and Branson.
In fact, team sponsorships remain for 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. rounds for an event that kicks off a busy fall schedule for both the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame and the PGA Web.com Tour’s Price Cutter Charity Championship presented by Dr Pepper.
In 2012, the Sporting Clays Classic drew 100 participants. More than 250 are expected this year.
“We are blessed to live in an area with homespun values, where Saturdays in the fall are often set aside for time in the field, or a day on the lake and where hunting and fishing are still mainstays of our recreational activities,” Willadsen said. “I think that these in and of themselves are the reasons for the success of the Sporting Clays Classic.”
A sponsorship team of four is $500, or $150 for an individual shooter. Each shooter receives 100 clays and a logoed event gift. A continental breakfast and lunch will be served, while trophies will be awarded to the best overall shooter per round and top four flighted teams.
A raffle of outdoor equipment, fishing and hunting gear also is planned. The grand prize is a Remington 870 Express 12 gauge shotgun.

The raffle also features two grand prizes — Cabela’s Polar Cap cooler and a Cabela’s Outfitter Game Camera.
“We live in the Ozarks where virtually everyone owns a shotgun or two,” Willadsen said, “so the thought of getting out with a bunch of your buddies to go shooting is not a far-fetched idea. We hope the community joins us in supporting a fun competition.”
The Hall of Fame’s schedule includes the Stan Musial Hall of Fame Championship presented by Landau on Sept. 16-17 at Old Kinderhook Golf Resort at Lake of the Ozarks, and the St. Louis Enshrinement presented by Great Southern Bank on Nov. 4 at Chase Park Plaza. Football and basketball luncheons will be announced at later dates.
Upcoming September PCCC events are: the Chances of Stone County Bowl-A-Thon (11 a.m. Sept. 8 at Enterprise Park Lanes); the Harvest Moon Festival presented by Reinhart Foodservice (5 p.m. Sept. 23 at Highland Springs Country Club); and the Children’s Smile Center Poker Run Golf Classic (9 a.m. Sept. 28 at Silo Ridge Golf & Country Club in Bolivar).
October features the Platinum Clubs & Clays Classic presented by USA Mortgage (Oct. 10 at Top of the Rock & Bass Pro Shops Shooting Academy), and the Rockin’ Roll Bike & Music Festival. The festival is an Oct. 13 bicycle ride of 40, 20 or 10 miles followed by a dinner and concert featuring 1980s cover band Members Only.
