As an amateur, Spinks won 178 of his 185 bouts, including 133 knockouts. In 1974, Spinks competed in the World Games held in Cuba and won a bronze medal. A year later, he brought home a silver medal from the Pan-Am Games. In 1976, Spinks traveled to the Olympic Games in Montreal, where he won a gold medal.

After only seven professional fights in 1978, Leon Spinks took on the World Heavyweight Champion, Muhammad Ali. With a record of 6-0-1, Spinks made boxing history by defeating Muhmmad Ali and earning the World Heavyweight Championship.

Leon and his brother, Micheal, are the only siblings in the history of boxing to win the World Heavyweight Championship.
