William Harrison “Tyke” Yates was born in Auxvasse, Missouri, and graduated from Auxvasse High School and later, Westminster College.

Tyke Yates taught and coached golf and basketball at Webster Groves High School from 1941 through 1966. During his 20-year coaching career, Yates’ basketball teams amassed a 351-151 record and qualified five times for the state tournament. His teams won five Suburban League championships.

In 1958, he was appointed dean of students at the high school. In 1966, Yates left Webster Groves to become dean of men at Westminster College in Fulton. From 1970 until he retired in 1985, he was Westminster’s director of alumni and parent relations.
