“Greatest pair of hands I’ve ever seen”. - Stan Musial on Red Schoendienst

Red Schoendienst has been in baseball for over 51 years.  He coached St. Louis from 1961 to 1964 under manager Johnny Keane.  He then began a 12-year stint as Cardinal manager, the longest anyone has occupied the position.  As manager, he led the Cardinals to National League pennants in 1967 and 1968 and the World Championship in 1967.  He was a coach for Whitey Herzog on the Cardinals’ 1982 World Championship team and the 1985 and 1987 NL Championship teams.  He also served as interim manager of the Redbirds in 1980 and 1990, becoming the first man to manage in four different decades with the same team.

As a Cardinal player for 14 seasons, he was an outstanding second baseman and hitter.

Schoendienst was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame twice, in 1987 as a Coach and 2005 as a Legend.
