Joe Bill Dixon is a life-long resident of West Plains, Missouri. He attended West Plains High School and competed in basketball and track.

Dixon’s teaching and coaching career began in 1968 at Richards R-5 School in West Plains. He transferred to West Plains High School in 1978 and started a new cross country program for the school, while also handling assistant basketball and track coaching duties. Success followed Dixon’s arrival on the Zizzer’s staff, as his cross country team won its first of 16 consecutive 4A District Championships. They went on to win the 4A State Championship, the first in the school’s history in any sport. Since 1979, his boys’ teams have won eight more titles, four second place finishes and four third place finishes. The boys’ teams have six individual state championships and seven in track. In 1983, Dixon became the girls cross country and track coach. Since that time, his girls’ teams have won six 4A State Championships and three seconds. They won ten consecutive 4A District titles from 1986 to 1995 in cross country.
