Inductees

Howard Iba, the brother of legendary Oklahoma State University basketball coach Henry Iba, was the longtime basketball coach at Central High School in St. Joseph. He and his brother grew up in the northwest Missouri town of Easton, playing basketball on a dirt court with their other two brothers, Clarence and Earl .

All four brothers went on to coaching careers and are members of the Missouri Basketball Hall of Fame. Howard Iba coached at Central High School for 26 seasons. He led the Indians to their greatest achievement in 1958, when the boys finished second in the state with a 26-3 record.

In his early days, Iba played basketball in Wichita, Kan., on his brother Henry’s AAU National Basketball Championship Team during the 1930-31 season. He coached basketball at Conception, Mo., from 1931-1935, and at Olathe, Kan., from 1936 to 1941. In 1941 he moved to St. Joseph and began work as a teacher and head basketball coach at Central High School. He continued until his retirement in 1969. He also served in the Army during World War II.

Iba was a graduate of Northwest Missouri State Teachers College in Maryville, where he was captain of the college basketball team.
