George Edwards truly belonged to the University of Missouri; he played basketball there and then eventually landed as the Tigers’ head basketball coach for 20 seasons. He took over for George Bond and led the Tigers (who were a part of the Missouri Valley Conference for the first two seasons of his tenure) to an overall record of 353-181.

The Tigers went to just one NCAA Tournament under Edwards (in 1944), but they were regular-season champions in the Big Six on three separate occasions (1930, 1939, 1940). It’s also worth noting that the NCAA Tournament wasn’t significant in college sports until 1939.

Edwards was very busy serving as MU’s Athletic Director from 1943 to 1945 (while he was still coaching). He was an essential figure in University of Missouri athletics.

Before his illustrious career at the University of Missouri, Edwards was the head football coach at Kansas Wesleyan University for two years. He also coached golf.
