A graduate of St. Joseph Benton High School, Gary Filbert lettered in football,

where he played for the freshman basketball squad.  Upon returning from a four
year stint in the U.S. Marine Corps, Filbert was a three year varsity basketball
letterman for the Tigers.  Upon graduation, he became the Director of Athletics,
head basketball coach and history teacher at Mexico High School, where his teams
won 260 games and lost 110.  In 1969, Filbert made the jump to the college
ranks, taking the reigns of the Missouri Western State College men’s basketball

appearances and was a three time Missouri NAIA District Coach of the Year
selection.  In 1982, he was hired as an assistant coach under Norm Stewart at
the Univeristy of Missouri.  He helped guide the Tigers to a No. 2 ranking in
NCAA Division I polls and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament.  MU then hired
Filbert as the Assistant Director of Athletics in 1985, a post he would hold for
