Tom Henke grew up in Wardsville, MO and attended Blair Oaks High School. He excelled as a prep baseball player and signed to play at East Central Junior College after high school. In 1980, Henke signed with the Texas Rangers and split his time between the Rangers and their farm club, the Tulsa Drillers. From Texas, Henke signed with the Toronto Blue Jays.

As a Blue Jay, he appeared in four American League Championship Series and also helped the team win the 1992 World Series. In 1993, Henke returned to Texas where he spent one season and established a team record with 40 saves. He then signed with the St. Louis Cardinals and turned in one of this finest seasons as a pro. He was voted to the All-Star Game, won the 1995 Rolaids Relief Award and was voted the Cardinals Player of the Year.
