A native of Waterloo, Iowa, Larry Nemmers’ teaching career began in 1965 and continued until his retirement in 1994. During his time as an educator, he served as teacher, textbook publisher, assistant principal and principal. During his time in education, he also began a career as a high school official. He officiated both high school football and basketball for 18 years. In 1975, he made the jump to college officiating. He officiated Big Ten Conference football for nine years, including the 1984 Rose Bowl and officiated NCAA basketball for eight years.

In 1985, Nemmers earned an opportunity to become an NFL official. His 15 year NFL career has seen him officiate the playoffs for 14 years, including Super Bowl XXV. In 2000, Nemmers officiated one playoff game and was selected as the alternate for Super Bowl XXXV.
