Robert Carlson was born in Fairfield, Iowa. After graduating from Fairfield High School in 1942, he attended Parsons College, also in Fairfield. Later he attended Kansas City Central Radio and TV School before joining the staff of KIRX Radio in 1949. It was there that he became known as the “Voice of the Bulldogs” for his coverage of Truman State University’s athletics. He also covered the Kirksville Senior High School Tigers during this time. In August 1992, he retired after 43 years of broadcasting.

Aside from his work in radio, Carlson also was active in the Kirksville Baseball Association and helped organize the Golden Eagles. He also occasionally worked for several local car dealerships.
