The 1904 Olympic Games were held in St. Louis in conjunction with the World’s Fair. Furla, a Greek immigrant, represented the United States in the Marathon. It was blistering hot day, and only 14 of the 31 runners finished the race with Furla finishing 13th.  It is said he might have won the race except for stopping several times to aid fallen runners.

Furla went on to become a successful businessman and an outstanding member of St. Louis’ Missouri Athletic Club.  In 1992 he was selected to be a charter member of the MAC Hall of Fame.
