Henry was head coach of the University of Missouri from 1923 to 1931. During his tenure, he compiled a 40–28–9 (.578) record. On December 25, 1924, he led Mizzou against the University of Southern California at the Los Angeles Christmas Festival, losing 20-7.

Before his coaching career, Henry was a football player and track and field athlete at Southwestern University in Texas. He had been selected by the AAU to compete for the United States in the 1912 Stockholm Olympic Games in track and field but declined the invitation to stay with his wife who was ill at the time.

From 1912 to 1913, he was the head coach at Howard Payne University. Additionally, he coached at the University of Kansas, the University of New Mexico, and the College of Emporia.
