Ed Wray was a sportswriter who was known for his column, Wray’s Column in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. His career spanned 55 years. He focused mainly on horse racing, boxing, and football, particularly the history of the forward pass. The first legal forward pass was thrown by Bradbury Robinson of St. Louis University in 1906 and Wray stated that Edward B. Cochems, the SLU coach at the time, was “no doubt responsible” for developing the play.

Wray was born in 1873 in Alton, Illinois. He first pursued a career in engineering at MIT but later switched to liberal arts. After a stint in the haberdashery business, he then took an interest in the newspaper business.
