With former Missouri Tigers football coach Gary Pinkel lined up for a special appearance – and a goal of generating more scholarship dollars for Mizzou-bound students – the Greater Ozarks Chapter of the Mizzou Alumni Association has lined up a two-day event in May in Springfield.

The association’s annual Tiger Ball & Scholarship Auction presented by Meyer Farms, KTXR HD and KWTO is set for 6 p.m. Thursday, May 5 at the University Plaza Hotel. Pinkel, the winningest coach in Mizzou football history, will be on hand for an event that features a live band, cocktails, a dinner buffet as well as live and silent auctions.

Missouri Sports Hall of Fame President and Executive Director Jerald Andrews, who manages the events, and Andy Stewart, the President of the Greater Ozarks Chapter of the Missouri Alumni Association, announced the events Wednesday. The tag-team effort has helped the events become enormous successes. To sign up, call 417-889-3100, or visit Greater Ozarks Chapter of the MU Alumni Association.

“Our partnership with the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame has helped us create the most successful golf tournament in the MU Alumni Association,” Stewart said. “Over the past few years, we have raised nearly $100,000, which has been applied towards scholarships for local students. For a number of students, it means the difference between pursuing a college degree or starting in the work force.”

The Greater Ozarks Chapter also has created an endowment thanks to the success of these events. “Our goal was to apply $25,000 towards our endowment in five years. We completed our goal in just over two years and now have approximately $40,000 in our endowment fund. And we are not done funding it. We want it to continue to grow.”

Tickets for the Tiger Ball & Scholarship Auction are $40, or $300 for a table of eight. The silent and live auctions will feature a number of Mizzou-related gifts as well as outdoor activities, including lake experiences and tickets to sporting events.

For the golf tournament, entry fee is $175 a person, or $750 for a team of four.

This flighted tournament offers morning and afternoon playing spots for foursomes and individuals. Players receive breakfast, lunch, on-course beverages and snacks as well as a nice golf package and a team photo. Tee times are 8 a.m. and 1 p.m.

To enter, call 417-889-3100.

“I’m very proud of the local board for creating an endowed scholarship,” Stewart said. “Long after this tournament, we will have scholarship money available for local students. There are future generations, some not even born yet, that will have access to a college scholarship. It’s a legacy that will live on and something we should all be very proud of.”
