Wynn Award: Springfield Catholic’s Angie (Bullock) Homeyer

Angie (Bullock) Homeyer-2

Back in the late 1980s through 1990, one of top names on Springfield’s high school track scene belonged to Angie (Bullock) Homeyer. Not only did she win multiple state medals, but she absolutely loved the sport.

Now her career is being remembered by the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame, which will recognize Homeyer with a Wynn Award during its Women’s Sports Luncheon presented by the Bee Payne-Stewart Foundation. The luncheon is at 11 a.m. March 23 at University Plaza Convention Center in Springfield. For tickets, call 417-889-3100.

“I love the sport of track and field because it’s truly athletics in its purest form. Winners are determined by who runs the fastest, jumps the highest or throws the farthest,” Homeyer said. “There are no referees making judgement calls, no coaches making substitutions, and no judges scoring your performance. It’s simply a demonstration of who’s the best at that moment in time – athlete vs. athlete.”

The Women’s Sports Luncheon includes the induction of College of the Ozarks’ Dora Quinn Arney Meikle, Drury University’s Barbara Cowherd, University of Missouri volleyball coaches Wayne and Susan Kreklow and the Licking High School volleyball team that won the first volleyball state championship in 1975.

The inaugural Wynn Awards are named in honor of Dr. Mary Jo Wynn, the pioneer of women’s athletics at Missouri State University. The awards are presented to former high school, college and pro athletes for their contributions in athletics. Homeyer is among seven recipients.

Angie (Bullock) Homeyer-1

Homeyer was an eight-time state medalist in Class 2, including a two-time state champion. She won the 100 meter hurdles (16.19 seconds) in 1990 and the 300 meter hurdles (46.33 seconds) in 1989. Homeyer also placed fourth in the 300 meter hurdles (49.11 seconds) her senior year, a year after placing fourth in the 100 meter hurdles (16.55).

Additionally, Homeyer was part of Catholic’s 1989 state runner-up 4×400 and fifth-place 4×200 relay teams that also included the late Stephanie (Thurman) Phillips, a Missouri Sports Hall of Fame inductee. That Catholic girls track team placed third in Class 2. Overall, Homeyer earned 111 track medals during her high school career, including 15 district medals that included seven championships. Every event she ran – and every relay team she competed on – set school records.

Homeyer also was a four-year letter winner in volleyball at Catholic, helping the 1989 team place third in Class 2. She was a first team All-State selection in 1989, and the only Springfield high school player in any of the four classes to be awarded that honor.

Homeyer, who played two volleyball seasons at Drury University for Coach Cowherd, graduated Summa Cum Laude in 1994 with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and Communication after attending as a Missouri Bright Flight Scholar. She was the second-ranked graduate in her class with a 3.97 GPA, and was selected by the Drury faculty as the 1994 Outstanding Senior Woman of the Year.

“My success as a track athlete would not have been possible without the contributions made by my hurdles coach, Emry Dilday, and by my parents, Warner and Mary Ann Bullock. Emry was always positive, gave great advice on improving my hurdling technique, and made track practice fun, if that’s possible,” Homeyer said. “As an athlete, I wanted to perform well for him, and to this day, he remains a cherished friend. My dad was, without a doubt, my biggest fan. And my mom took great care of me, always bringing Gatorade, blankets, hot rice or ramen in a Thermos, and whatever else I needed to stay ready to run.”

The other Wynn Award recipients are Missouri State field hockey standout Marjorie (DeMarino) Bankovich; Camdenton High School soccer standout Monique (Willcut) Begley; Monett High School basketball and track standout Angela (Beckett) Johnson; Springfield angler Julie Martin; Lebanon High School/Mizzou golfer Kerry (Speaker) North; and Jamie Vest, a cross country standout from Stoutland and Missouri State University.

An individual ticket is $40, and a head table ticket is $100. A table of eight is $400 and includes associate sponsor recognition in the printed program. Sponsorships also are available. Call the Hall of Fame at 417-889-3100.
